Speaker Positioning
If you have recently purchased a home entertainment system or new speakers, the next step is to install them into your household. For optimal sound, carefully consider where to place your speakers. Remember that every room is different, speakers have various sonic characteristics and each person hears differently. First, find the best place for the center channel speaker, responsible for most dialogue and other sounds heard on television. The best spot is directly above or below your TV and centered on the screen. If on top, align the center speaker’s front edge with the TV screen to reduce sound distortion.
The Front Speakers
The front left and right speakers handle most movie soundtracks, and should be placed so their tweeters are parallel with the center channel’s tweeter – about 24 inches from the floor. Having the tweeters are ear level when seated ensures the best possible sound. Most stands are designed so the tweeters will be at ear height.
Surround Speakers
Atmospheric sound and special effects rely on the home theater’s surround speakers to put you in the middle of the action. Placing the surrounds speakers to the left and right of where you sit, either in line or slightly behind, is ideal. But most people have to experiment to find the sound that’s right for them.
Subwoofer Placement
The last component of a 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 system is the subwoofer. You can place the subwoofer in various locations because bass frequencies are non-directional. Usually, it’s best to place the subwoofer in the front of the room, about six inches from the wall. To really boost the bass sound, put the subwoofer in a corner. But for the most accurate bass, the subwoofer should be moved away from the wall.
The Room’s Overall Characteristics
Also consider the characteristics of the room. Putting the front speakers next to a wall can increase their bass output, but it can muddy the sound of floor-standing speakers. Bringing speakers out from the wall may reduce bass response, but it can improve clarity. Windows, tile and other reflective surfaces may make the sound too harsh or bright, while adding carpets or drapes can make your system sound more natural.
When installing speakers, be sure to carefully consider placement as this will greatly impact the sound quality. If you follow the guidelines above, you will be sure to not only experience great sound, but enhanced home entertainment overall.
